Before America's official entry into World War 2, a battle had already begun in Hollywood. Months ahead of the filming of Casablanca, the ancient soul of Nemach struggles to keep his descendant, Humphrey, from assassination by the Nazis.
To add to his troubles, the gods continuously throw Nemach's Ka back to ancient Egypt, forcing him to relive a part of his life he would rather have forgotten. But why? Somewhere in that long ago past there is something he must remember, something that may help him save Humphrey.

This is the second book in the series and I think I like it ever more than the first. Both are quick reads and are loaded with creativity. In this one we spend some time in ancient Egypt with a royal scribe who is tasked by the Pharaoh to solve three murders - one of a Priestess and two of cats. The story shifts between these realistic scenes and 1940s Hollywood, complete with Humphrey Bogart, Spencer Tracy and a host of other stars. The 3000 year old soul of the royal scribe (his Ka) resides on Bogart's mantle happily whiling away the centuries and now dwelling in the Maltese Falcon. For reasons unknown to him, he starts sliding back in time, reliving the memories of his old life, only to realize his actions in Egypt will now have consequences in his present time.Like it said, it's bubbling over with creativity. Written in a easy style and suitable for all ages, this is a very nice story and I look forward to the next installment.

The Soul of Nemach and the Temple of Bast edition by Scott Butcher Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I love how these short books are like episodes. The idea of old Hollywood mixed with ancient Egypt is unlike anything I've ever read before, and it is so creative and entertaining.
I settled for three stars here because I found it hard to relate to and subsequently rate this one. On the one hand, there was a lot to like about it - it's very well written and thoroughly edited, it picks right up where the first part ended and seemlessly leads on to what probably will be a soon-to-come part three...only thing is, it didn't have much of a plot. It's mainly Nemach's memories, but we don't know how relevant they actually are. I guess it would have made a good intro if the story itself had continued in the same book, but as it is, as a stand-alone, it doesn't quite work.
In this second episode, The Temple of Bast, the series gets ramped up a bit. With the time-shifts back to ancient Egypt, we are treated to a fascinating look deeper into the characters of both Nemach and Emeline and get a glimpse at the relationship between them. The are details of Nemach's past life he must remember that have a significance in the present as he tries to protect his descent, Humphrey. We also see the symbolism in Emeline's present incarnation as the Woman in Black. I very much enjoyed the first episode, The Burbank Adventure, and I think I like this one even more. This is shaping up to be a fun and fascinating series, and I'll be on board for the long run. Looking forward with baited breath for the next episode.
